Batalion Powstańczy: Educational game about the Warsaw Uprising

Batalion Powstańczy (Lekcja Powstanie) is a web game for school students about a group of medics in the Warsaw Uprising, played in the classroom and in the field. We made it with Fundacja Macte Animo: we provided the technology, the foundation the content and the artwork.

Batalion Powstańczy on three phones, interface in Polish: the welcome to the PARASOL battalion, a comic-book scene in the ruins of Warsaw, and the progress map of the game's stages.

01 · Business context

The problem

Fundacja Macte Animo wanted to bring history to life for school students.

The idea was a game about a group of medics in the Warsaw Uprising that teachers could use both in the classroom and in the field.

The game was to be built on artwork the foundation had already made, and that artwork had to look right on every device and screen size.

The client

Fundacja Macte Animo

An educational foundation that wanted an engaging, interactive tool to make learning history more enjoyable, for teachers to use in class and outdoors.

The game was a joint project: the foundation provided the historical content and the artwork, and we provided the technology and ran the technical side of the project.

02 · Key features

What we built

A web app that works on any screen size, built in three months by a front-end developer and a project manager. These are its most important features.

  • Artwork on every screen

A custom display mechanism fits the foundation's artwork to any screen size.

  • Field play with QR codes

Students scan QR codes to unlock the next stage of the game.

  • Teacher's dashboard

Teachers create and manage games and take notes, with logins separate from the students'.

  • Stages, scores and mini-games

The game runs in stages with a scoreboard and short challenges, such as putting out fires. Finding a hidden emblem of the Polish Underground State earns bonus points.
