Matura – Testy i Zadania: Exam-prep app for high-school students

A mobile app that helps Polish high-school students prepare for the matura, the school-leaving exam, with official exam questions and offline access. More than 200,000 downloads, and a category win at the Mobile Trends Awards 2022.

01 · Business context

The problem

StudentNews.pl had exam tests only on its website, while more and more students prepared for exams on their phones.

The company decided to move into mobile with an app that has official exam questions, study tools and offline access, so students can revise anywhere.

The company behind StudentNews.pl, a Polish portal for students with information about universities, majors and the matura, plus exam tests and study materials. Matura was our first project together; the second was Egzamin Ósmoklasisty, for students finishing primary school.

02 · Key features

What we built

A React Native app for iOS and Android, with a Node.js backend. These are its most important features.

  • Official exam questions

    The app uses official matura questions from the Central Examination Board (CKE) in many subjects, filed by subject and question type.

  • Offline mode

    Tests are downloaded to the phone, so students can keep revising without an internet connection.

  • Exam toolkit

    Notes for each task, a calculator and tables of common formulas, built to work on any screen size.

  • Progress tracking

    Each student's progress is saved and synced with the server.

03 · Results

What changed

In the client's words, the app allowed them to gain more customers and advertise their services to a broader audience.

Key achievements

  • More than 200,000 downloads across Google Play and the App Store.
  • Winner of the Mobile Trends Awards 2022 in the category Mobile for children and young people (Mobile dla dzieci i młodzieży). Grupa StudentNews.pl entered the app, with Geeknauts as its developer.
  • The client came back for a second app, Egzamin Ósmoklasisty, launched in April 2022.
